A couple of 2pg short stories written by Marc Deschamp. First one is for the anthology THE GATHERING. It's a monster themed issue, and his story was adorable. There's no way I could resist ~~ruining~~ drawing it.

This short story is for a Wizard Magazine tribute zine being put together by Steve Flack, and some cats from the Brian Bendis message board. I liked the idea of the pages being the same in design, and the fact there wasn't any dialogue made it fun to see if I could tell a story. ~~Which I obviousl can't.~~

Why am I so awesome? Because I'm a cartoonist that doesn't have a job, and I ~~constantly~~ update my blog with promises I don't keep because I end up throwing out whatever it is I'm doing.

For example, the re-draw of THE RABBIT & THE MOON happened, failed, looked like garbage and was unfixable. I ended up liking the original black & white UNwashed pages a bit more. Did some tweaks and I'm going to send them to Top Shelf 2.0 to be rejected.

I'm also working on HELLHOUNDS ON MY TRAIL trying to get that finished off so I can ~~decide to redraw that as well~~ print it up.

Because the first attempt was an exercise in how to draw horribly, I'm re-drawing the short comic, and per my usual ways I'm being nitpicky about every little thing and it's taking me a week to do each page. Not that any of them will be any good, either.

I wish I were one of those confident artists that were, you know, productive. I apparently hate money, or I'd put more stuff out.

The Rabbit And The Moon

This is a short story based on a fairy tale I heard in Japan when I was a little kid. The original is called THE OLD MAN IN THE MOON and is about an old man ... in the moon ... who decides to dress poorly and visit three animals - a fox, a rabbit, and a monkey - to see who would be generous enough to feed him. The monkey and the fox offered him some of their food. But the rabbit, not having any food, offered himself as a soup. The old man thought this was the kindest gesture and took the rabbit to live with him in the moon. And that's where we get the image of a rabbit on the moon's surface.

That ... and astroids. But, I hope you enjoy MY version.

One's an image of me fighting zombies. A promo/maybe cover for my 24hr comic. About me fighting zombies. I'm a horrible writer, so yes, I cheat and come up with a plot beforehand. It's also based on a Frank Frazetta painting. He's not acknowledged in the drawing because my drawing is insulting to him enough.

The other image is just an illo of Frankenstein's monster done for fun to test out some new paper and break in a new brush. The monster isn't SUPPOSED to look like Robert DeNiro, but it came out that way anyways because that movie was awful.

I hate both images. I'll let you decide which is worse.

Coloring In Comcs.

I feel that coloring is pointless in comics unless it's used as a means to serve the story. It needs a purpose other than telling me Odie is yellow. Hobbes is orange, Spider-man's jimjams are red/blue (or black, depending on if the artist is on model or not)

I don't need to know that stuff. I know tigers are orange, so I can assume Hobbes is orange. It's not important at all to see Spider-man's costume is red/blue because his design, with the webbing and spider insignia, perfectly conveys he's trying to get a spider-y look. (what red/blue has to do with spiders, and why his costume IS red/blue is beyond anyone) One of the great things that makes Batman so visually appealing is because his costume is just DARK and scary in black & white.

If it's not used for a story purpose then it just seems like a wasted process.

Frank MIller's THAT YELLOW BASTARD is a perfet example. The character's skin condition is part of the story so he needs to be yellow. And since he's the only thing colored in the book, it adds impact to the character being an obviously noticable "freak." Because I can assume everyone else is of regular black, white, asian skin tones. But THIS guy, he stands out even when he wants to be subtle.

Well, that's just my opinion on it. When I look at a colored comic and color isn't part of the story, I just think the creator wasted their time conducting a process that adds nothnig, and is there because it's ingrained in American comics minds that color is better.

Lately, I feel like I'm conciously stifling my growth as an artist, and the direction my art wants to go.

As my style becomes more and more exaggrated in motion of character and expression of line, I find myself being drawn more and more towards wanting to draw "bigfoot style" - I keep wondering if I should embrace this.

The bigfoot style is still used in some European books, which is becoming a major influence on my work as far as storytelling and expression.

With my journal comics, and sometimes 1pg random comics, I tend to draw in a more cartoonish, and exxagerated style. I generally like to play with shapes of people's faces, bodies, etc. I'm more comfortable drawing my cartoonish and exxagerated forms than I am drawing for believability.

Even currently, I tend to lean more towards an open line figure and detailled backgrounds.

Many Franco-Belgium cartoonist, like Peyo, use a similar style and his stories for THE SMURFS or JOHAN & PERLOUIT weren't "dated" or outside the realm of believability despite having cartoony figures. Same for Didier Conrad, Andre Franquin. Even Bill Watterson, probably my biggest influence, used a slightly more toned down bigfoot style in CALVIN & HOBBES and those strips are pretty powerful and meaningful when you look at the subtext.

Even R. Crumb maintained his bigfoot style for his serious adaptation of GENESIS.

MAUS was draw with anthropomorphic cartoon characters and the emotional impact of the story still hits you in the heart like a jackhammer hits butter. It won a pulitzer. And I can't help but think it wouldn't HAVE that same impact if he'd done realistic figures.

I think maybe it's because I grew up on American comics, and the American medium has that mentality that it needs to be realistic and believable, even when it's exaggerated, or it's just a "silly" cartoon.

I guess I'll just let it go, and see where the wind takes me.

That's a link to THE BOSTON STRONGBOY, the first 24hr comic I ever drew. Like HELIO, I liked the story enough to want to re-draw it in a more finished line than 24hr comic day allows. I've noticed that for my mini-comics, and 24hr comics I prefer to tell the story in a more childlike manner. That is, I like them to read like children's books without sounding condescending.

I hope that was accomplished.

That's a link to my facebook page, where I've uploaded the pages to my 24pg mini-comic HELIO. It's a mini-bio-comic about Brazillian Jiu-jitsu founder Helio Gracie. The intention was to make it seem like a children's book, and hopefully somewhat inspirational.

It's not something I'm going to publish for many, many reasons. It was done for fun. Originally as a 24hr comic last year, but when I finished, I liked the story so much I wanted to re-draw it in a more finished look than 24hr Comic Day will allow. I also used it as an opportunity to experiment with a few things, so it's a bit rough in places.

One thing I need to overcome in my art is the horrible American mindset that backgrounds aren't important, or necessary. Most "professional" American comics will use a background to establish setting, then, if the artist can get away with not drawing it, they don't draw it. Sometimes for 4-5 pages.

I just read a preview of a "professional comic" where the first page, a splash page, established the setting, then the next 4 pages were fighting in blank, or wonderfully colored panels. A hint of surrundings would make it into the panel if one of the baddies had to get punched into a crate, or pick up an object. That's like watching THERE WILL BE BLOOD and the entire movie was played out in front of a blue screen, and the only time you saw a background was in a pulled back establishing shot or if a character picked up something/touched an object.

I'm not saying every panel needs to be filled with richly detailled backgrounds, but it should serve the story if there isn't going to be a visible setting. Lack of background can create mood, atmosphere, emotion. Like color, it can be used as a weapon in the arsenal of storytelling.

Sports Comics.

One thing I hate about sports-related comics is when the writer tries to capture the announcer's voice in caption as if the reader was watching a live broadcast. Generally, the writer just over writes the action in the panel, telling you what you're looking at plus maybe what happened in the gutters between panels.

The problem with that is it creates "dead air" in the comic. It sounds like a writer who, even if they WATCH sports, they don't LISTEN to sports. Broadcasts never have dead air. It's a major no-no. So, as a writer, one has to ceate that sense of constant communication.

Announcers do more than just call the play-by-play on a moment. Be it baseball, basketball, football, soccer, boxing or mixed-martial arts. They tell you what's going on, what needs to happen, what COULD happen, and even relate the moments/events to something else.

I tried to avoid this mistake when writing BOSTON STRONGBOY or HELIO by making the stories personal. Personal to the characters and personal to the readers as if they were having the stories told to them.

I hope to one day incorporate the "announer voice" in a comic. I have one in mind that'll require it, but it's a long ways off.

Page from A.M. RADIO, a short story written by Adam Witt. This was something a little different for me because I inkwashed the background, trying to give it depth. It didn't work like until Anne Jurack, gave all the pages a sepia tone, and some clean-/touch-ups, really saving my ass.

The story is supposed to be printed in an anthology for Dial R Studios, but I don't know when it's coming out. I'll post the other pages when it does.

Posting some recent ... ish ... drawings.

Up first is a 2pg intro to DARING ADVENTURES STARRING CAPTAIN DAVID DARE done for fun. Not trying to be precious about anything in it. It's an old character for a concept I came up with almost 6-7 years ago. An homage to old EC-style sci-fi comics, and b/w serials like Buck Rogers. A HORRIBLY drawn short story featuring the character, written by Nathan Patton and inked by Jeffery Lejeune (whose inks really made it look better) was printed in THE HUNGER #5. I suggest you don't bin dive for it.

Second is a one-pg comic I WAS going to submit to The Daily Crosshatch's Guest Strip but thought it was too angry.

Last, a daily jounral comic I drew on some of that pre-printed funnies strip format bristol board. I usually don't like using the stuff because it's too waxxy, and when you erase the pencils the ink sometimes fades off. Or it doesn't dry as well because of said wax. But, I got 5 of them for free and didn't want to waste it.

Now that my wife, the writer, has finalized the script (again) I've started re-drawing the original 25pgs I had finished. Mostly because I've decided to use a brush instead of a static line pen rapidograph that I normally use. The point of the switch is to make the lines feel a little more organic, or textural, because nature plays a major part in the story, and the lines I put down with a brush is as unpredictabe as nature. So, it fits.

The stuff I mainly have done now is just part titles and chapter break cards. There's a little design involved since I want to invoke dialogue cards of silent films, and the feeling of old comics by McCay, and Herriman. I'll probably be getting into the actual story pages later this week.

So, I've got 10pgs left to pencil for this Robert Johnson book. It's 44gs. 25 are completely inked. My goal is to get the rest of the book pencilled by this friday 21.May.2010 so I can just concentrate on inking them the next week and get this baby done.

Here's the cover. Not sure if it's the FINAL cover. I'm wondering if I should inkwash it or not, but I'd like some kind of background texture. Might have someone color it up. I'm not sure.

Everyoe knows who Dick Tracy is, but probably 4 people in the world know who TRIGGER MACLIAMOURE is.

He's the Smoking Gun detective. The gumshoe with a gun for a head. Created by Scott Iwahashi. The character never saw print, even though Scott and Benito Cereno whipped up a short story featuring him.

I love this character, and hope to do a story with him some day, with Scott's permission. :D

Sadly, I failed at getting HELLHOUNDS ON MY TRAIL finished, mainly because the lettering on the first 4 pages didn't match the lettering on the current pages so I hav to go back and redraw those pages so they match.

But, I've decided to put that aside and do a couple shorter stories. PHINEAS GAGE, DARE DEVIL (working title), and a short story for Dial R Studios anthology.

All of these stories and more, though, will get reprinted in a collection of short works I'm calling THE PENNY DREADFULS. Instead of being individually printed.

HELLHOUNDS ON MY TRAIL, my book about Robert Johnson's last day is basically a "walk of death" as he reminisces about moments in his past as he walks an old Mississippi road to get to a juke joint, where he's supposed to play.

It's 46pgs. 17 were complete as of last night.

I've come to the conclusion that if I did 2pgs a day (which isn't impossible. I've been known to get 4 done on good days) I can complete the remaining 29pgs by Dec. 21. Thus beating my new year's resolution quota of having 2 mini-comics done by 1.

And 2pgs were completed today, keeping to that schedule. yay.

After HHOMT, I thought THE MYTH OF PHINEOUS GAGE was going to be my next book, but my wife, the writer, has announced she'll have a different mini-comic script completed before then.

And she does.

It doesn't have a title yet, but it's a story based on her Great Grandfather's time hopping the rails in the 1920's, which we were going to do after PHINEOUS GAGE. But you can see where I'm going with this. It should be roughly 25-28pgs. So, while she writes PHINEOUS GAGE, I'll be drawing a rail riding story.

My awesome wife came up with new mini-comic. About a railroad worker in the late 1800's named Phineous Gage, who tapped dynamite into walls for a living and accidently blew a rail spike THROUGH his skull and survive.

He went on to live a normal life, but there are a bunch of awesome myths surround what he did after it happened. Beause of that, the book will be called:

THE MYTH OF PHINEOUS GAGE

an untrue story inspired by real events

We'll b working on that after HELLHUNDS ON MY TRAIL is finished, which should't be too long. 17pgs out of 48pgs are done. :D

One of the projects I'm working on right now is a mini-comic calld HELIO. It's a mini-bio-comic about Helio Gracie, co-creator of Gracie Jiu-Jitsu. Which has become known around the world as Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.

It's about 26pgs, and it's about done. I have only a couple of pages left to ink on it.

Once it's finished, I need to decide if I want to print it alone, or include it as 1 of 3 mini-comics about sports legends in a single 78 page book. Because aside from HELIO, I also have BOSTON STRONGBOY, and an idea for a story about bullit car racing I'd like to do.

also, I'll be a regular contributor to an in-development site. I'll be waxing philosophical on the the craft of comics ... and little things, too. Telling everyone the proper wat to not make comics by pointing you to people who DO properly make comics.

Also, 24hr comic day just happened, and yes I ~~fucked up another story with my horrible skillz~~ drew another comic. This one was about Helio Gracie. And just like the Boston Strongboy I'm going to ~~screw this one up, too~~ re-draw it because I like the story and want it to look ~~good~~ better than it does.

I want to go outside and paint but it's too windy and my supplies will blow over. The sky has some nice touches of grey, whites, and blues and the view I want to paint has nice tree greens and yellows.

Crosshatching a 9x12 page with a 7x10 image area isn't fun when you have the annoying habit of holding your pens too tightly.

It's even less fun when, a couple days later, you redraw said image and use drybrush instead of crosshatching and it looks better.

1890 Batman?

Finished the commission. And a present for a friend. 1890's Batman, to go with the 1890's designs I kinda gave the rogues. Since most of the books I'm working on are late 1800's- early 1900's I thought I'd take a hint from Mignola's Gotham By Gaslight. Similar in design, but gave him a jacket instead of a constable cloak.

Started working on BREAKDOWN.

The script is divided into two parts. I'm working on Part 1 while Kimberly (the writer/my wife) edits and touches up Part 2. Part one clocked in at 41 pages of script and it's been highlighted with the appropriate tones (for reference, character designs, dialogue and sound FX)

11 pages of script produced 30 pages of layouts.

I love the format in which Kimberly writes because it lets me set the visual pace like every artist should.

It's going to be a long book.

Yellow Fever. A short story about Mother Jones adapted by me from a short prose story my wife wrote. I decided to scrap this b/w version because of my heavy Mignola influece and just do a straight inkwashed version. I'll post that once it's done.

Went to a concert and tried to sketch at the speed of movement. It's an exercise I took from Enrico Casarosa where he sketches at dances. The pen never leaves the paper and he never looks at the drawings while sketching.

I did it with a concert, letting my pen move with the flow of the music. I also sketched some of the musicians as they arrived, wearing costumes because it was near halloween.
